| Remarks : | This is from the same field I have been posting from recently. White-headed Munia are decreasing in number - partly due to trapping for pet shops and also a result of loss of habitat (in the city at least). However, there are still some large flocks to be seen at this field and
at some overgrown Chinese cemeteries.
On 26th Dec 2009 (using my pictures to count), there were more than 235 White-headed Munias and 1 Black-headed Munia Lonchura malacca sinensis at this site in the same flock. I have often seen a few Black-headed Munias mixed with the flocks. There were also a decent number of juveniles. The ratio of juveniles
to adults in this flock was 1:6.
One of their favourite foods is the Elephant grass Pennisetum purpureum which is abundant in this field.
Because of the fire, on this occasion I was able to get closer to them, near the road & using the car as a hide, to document plumage. - Amar |
