I came across this individual on 16th February 2018 at 0916 hrs while on a routine birding session on the outskirts of Ahmedabad.
The overall grey colour of the rump & coverts, solid black facial mask and the typical brilliant prominence & extent of white on the remiges unique only to the subspecies samamisicus were conclusive pointers. Possibly an adult male.
It was a very shy individual, and I had to wait for quite a while before it stepped out of the dense shrubs. It remained in the open for about ten seconds before disappearing back into the shrubs.
This is the first documented evidence of presence of samamisicus in India. - HB
