|Locally known as waku waku, a flock 50 birds was seen in Banni on 15th November 2016 by Bharat Kapdi of Epicenter Homestay and Vaibhav Mishra of CEDO.
The sandgrouse were very shy, keeping a distance. Hence only record shots could be taken.
The earlier record of this species was of 90 Spotted Sandgrouse by S.N. Varu on 7th of December 1997 from the Vakeria Dhand area of Banni.
According to Birds of Kutch (1945) by Salim Ali, the Spotted Sandgrouse is a winter visitor to Kutch, particularly abundant in some years.
This sighting comes after 19 years, hence an important record for the birds of Kutch. - JT
