|English synonyms:||European Woodcock, Woodcock, Common Woodcock|
|Bird Family :||Scolopacinae - Snipes & Woodcocks |
|Bird Group :||CICONIIFORMES |
|Red Data Status :||Least Concern|
|Remarks :||This bird was a surprise since it is rarely reported, perhaps because it is local
and nocturnal and is reclusive during the day and beautifully
camouflaged among the leaf litter of damp patches of forest.
This is a heavily cropped record shot.
Grimmett and Inskipp do say that it winters at lower elevations in the
Himalayas, though the map in the new guide only shows it as a breeder.
The date - Feb 24th is perhaps too early for breeding.
There is also shot on OBI from Garima Bhatia from April, which is perhaps
more likely to be during the breeding period. - VT
