Remarks :This is one of the most common birds across the Andaman islands. Its presence is felt through its booming calls in rainforests, open areas and around human habitations. However, it is a skulker, most often only seen as a large dark bird flying from one bush into another, very close to the ground. The bird is about the same size as a Greater Coucal that is common through most of mainland India. That morning, we barely stepped out of our hotel at Hut Bay to head out into the forest when we were surrounded by the vociferous calls of Brown Coucals. As we waited, 3 of them came out and spent quite some time in the open. In the 35+ days that I've spent in Andaman over the past one year, this was my 3rd experience of the bird giving me ample time to photograph it. -SMV
