This enigmatic skulker is a breeding migrant to this location (alt: 1200 metres) and has been regularly reported breeding between July to September every year. There are around 3 to 4 pairs reported in this location spread across 5 sq.km. This is probably the northernmost (though few more northerly records exists) record of this species breeding in the Western Ghats. The species is not reported from this location out of its breeding season and is presumed to be a breeding migrant.
This particular bird had two fully fledged chicks that were seen nearby, and the birds were moving in around 200-300 sq.mts. This same bird (individual identification was possible due to some damaged feathers on forehead) was also very vocal and periodically observed singing, sitting on pre-determined (favourite) perches, while intermittently disappearing in the bushes to feed the chicks. (Couldn't photograph them, as they were hidden in the bushes.) Quite a bold individual and very active even in dense foggy conditions. - AS |
