| Remarks : | In 2016, the world population of this highly endangered species was counted to 3,356 individuals, a remarkable 2.6% increase (Birdlife). 60% of Black-faced Spoonbills pass their winter months on the west coast of Taiwan (2016 census). The Chiku Wetland is absolutely critical for the survival of this species, as it gathers the majority of the wintering birds. In the past, the wetland has been saved from development thanks to international mobilisation and co-operation. Currently, local authorities and volonteers are focusing on creating a welcoming environment for the wintering spoonbills. An excellent interpretation centre provides information and hides for local and international visitors. The ongoing conservation of the Chiku Wetland is in the heart of the conservation of the Black-faced Spoonbill. - DZ |
