| Remarks : | It was cloudy today, and I didn't expect much bird activity, was walking at Gorewada when I noticed a bird fly away from a scooter parked there.
I noticed it was a Leafbird, and I know from my past observations that the Leafbird has a fascination for mirrors. I knew for sure, that this bird will come back.
I settled at a vantage point waiting for the bird to arrive. 5 minutes, 10 minutes..it was perhaps testing my patience. I knew it would turn up again. ( The prospect of clicking the otherwise shy and elusive Leafbird out in the open helped me keep patience)
Then, it arrived, and as I had predicted, would admire itself in the mirror of the scooter for as long as it could.
This is a male Leafbird, my earlier experience of a leafbird looking at the mirror is also of a male. It is actually not admiring itself, but is threatened by the presence of another male in its territory. So even when it flies away, the anxiety to check if the other male is still around brings it back. - TSR |
