After taking an early retirement in 1993 (as a museum curator of Lepidoptera), Julian began devoting more time to recreational birding. He had become interested in Asian birds when he lived in India for three years between 1958-1962, and for a period in his career he had published more papers on birds than on insects. Highlights of his early days in India include ringing Spanish Sparrows with Sálim Ali, confirming identifications with Humayun Abdulali, and adding eight species to the Delhi state list (based on specimens) while working with Usha Ganguli as she wrote A Guide to the Birds of the Delhi Area.
