| My love for wildlife started during my younger days. My grandfather took me to our farm looking for wildlife, particularly birds. I love going out with nature and learning about them. That is why I took a BSc in Biology for my undergraduate in 2000 and MSc on Applied Conservation and Ecology in 2011. I started my love of photography way back in college days with an ordinary compact camera taking photos of nature. Feeling inclined to pursue conservation work, I worked with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources where I had the opportunity to be involved in the Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary where I first mastered the identification and monitoring of migratory birds. My passion for nature continues as a novice wildlife biologist and deepens my work as a wildlife biologist and a wildlife photographer. When I got my first DSLR and a long lens, my desire in taking more wildlife photos became more serious. I joined an NGO, the Cebu Biodiversity Conservation Foundation Inc. as a conservation biologist working to conserve the biodiversity in the island and conduct research on endemic birds as an aspiring ornithologist. This is where I seriously work on my photography. I attended lots of training on wildlife research and wildlife photography facilitated by Conservation Leadership Program. Despite my work as a conservation biologist for 20 years going to different islands working on wildlife research or conservation, I always go out take some time in wildlife photography. Those great encounters with biodiversity make my research and work more meaningful as a wildlife photographer. I have had the opportunity to showcase my work in a public exhibition in malls and hotels or in different schools within our project sites. My wildlife photos go everywhere, and my advocacy to conserve biodiversity continues. In 2012 I was part of the team who described new species of owl in the Philippines: the Camiguin Hawk-owl Ninox leventisi and the Cebu Hawk-owl Ninox rumseyi together with world-renowned ornithologists. Two years ago, I started working on a book on birds and last year published the Photographic Guide on the Birds of Negros, Panay and Cebu with contributions from bird photographer friends. Sixty percent of the book is for donations to our partners working in bird or biodiversity monitoring, especially in different protected areas and key biodiversity areas in these islands. Currently, I am working as Operations Manager of the Philippines Biodiversity Conservation Foundation Inc. working towards the conservation of globally important islands in biodiversity in the country. |
