Formerly considered a subspecies of Myiomela major [Brachypteryx major]. Separated following:

Recent research suggests that this species and Nilgiri Robin Myiomela major should be reassigned to a new genus Sholicola and that the southernmost population ashambuensis from the Ashambu Hills should be treated as a separate species - Ashambu Sholakili.
