A Least Tern was found early July 2016 near Tokyo mixed with a flock of breeding Little Tern. This is the second record for Japan (and likely Asia) after a pair was trapped in the same area in 2014. Closely resembling Little Tern, the best separating feature is a grey rump and uppertail showing no contrast with the back, mantle and upperwings (as opposed to white tail and rump for Little Tern).
Taxonomic Notes :
A vagrant to the Oriental Region. Formerly considered conspecific with Little Tern Sternula albifrons.
