Malabar Trogon

Location :Kuldiha WLS, near Balasore, Odisha, India
Date : 24 February 2014
English synonyms:Indian Trogon, Ceylon Trogon, Striped Trogon
Bird Family :Trogonidae - Trogons
Bird Group :TROGONIFORMES
Red Data Status :Least Concern
Remarks :The Malabar Trogon is a misnomer, for, though it brings to mind the Western Ghats, it is widely distributed all over Odisha. It is reported from there much less often (all but one image on OBI is from Western Ghats) - but that's just because fewer people are birding there. Most serious birding trips to one of Odisha’s forests end up with this being ticked. I saw it thrice in the last two months at Kuldiha, though only once did I manage to get this record shot of the male. All this makes me think that it is no less common in northern part of Eastern Ghats than in the Western Ghats.

An annoying twig has been cloned out in PP. - AS

Taxonomic Notes :Species endemic to the Indian Subcontinent (India & Sri Lanka).
